Reasoning: More thinking – better answers?
Many everyday tasks require very little additional reasoning: rewriting an email, shortening a text or generating first ideas can usually be handled well within seconds.
Things are different when the task involves tricky logic, programming code, multi-step maths or decisions with many variables. Here, so-called reasoning models or thinking modes can invest additional computation and work through the problem before producing the final answer.
The scratchpad in the mind
You can think of the difference like a difficult exam question:
- Answer immediately or check first: For simple tasks, the obvious answer is often enough. For more complex questions, it can help to break the problem into smaller steps before arriving at a conclusion.
- Check intermediate steps: A reasoning process can help reveal logical breaks, contradictions or calculation errors that may be easier to miss in a fast response.
- More depth does not automatically mean more truth: A model can still start from a false premise even if it spends more time reasoning. Reasoning can improve logical performance, but it does not replace fact-checking.
Your leverage in everyday use
- Choose the right tool: More thinking time is not always useful. For creative writing, translations or quick feedback, a fast mode is often entirely sufficient.
- A practical rule of thumb:
- Fast mode: Language, tone, creativity, summaries and simple knowledge questions.
- Reasoning mode: Complex logic, analysis, code, calculations, planning and problems with many conditions.
- Explicitly ask for care: Even without a dedicated reasoning mode, you can signal that speed is not the goal:
“Analyse the problem carefully. Break it into sensible steps, check my assumptions, consider counterarguments and verify your result before drawing the final conclusion.”
The key point: More thinking is not an automatic quality button. But when intermediate steps, dependencies and error-checking matter, additional reasoning can make a decisive difference.
