Context: The ongoing conversation

When you ask a new question in an existing chat, the AI does not only have your latest message available. The previous conversation can also flow into the next answer. This context is what makes a conversation feel coherent. You can write: “And what do you think about point 3?” – and the system knows what you are referring to.

Important: Context is not the same as Memory. Memory can keep information available across multiple conversations. Context is the temporary workspace within this one conversation.

The limited desk

This workspace is not unlimited storage. It is more like a desk with a limited amount of space:

• The thread can break: If a conversation becomes very long, older information can fall out of the active context. An instruction from the beginning of the chat can therefore gradually lose influence.
• Old topics can get in the way: If you first discuss holiday destinations and then switch to tax questions, the beach holiday may still be sitting on the desk. That can influence which connections the model makes.
• Errors can propagate: If an incorrect number or assumption remains unchallenged in the chat, the AI may continue to use it in later answers as part of the existing conversational basis.

Your leverage in everyday use

• New topic, new chat: Start a fresh chat for every independent task. This helps prevent old baggage from muddying the new answer.
• Reset when things go wrong: If the AI gets stuck, repeats the same mistakes or ignores instructions, do not keep arguing endlessly in the same conversation. Start a new chat and bring across only the information that is actually needed.

The key point: Context is the desk of your conversation. What is on it influences the next answer – and not everything stays there forever.
